Pukerua Bay School’s popular annual quiz night has a sci-fi theme this year. The event has been a tradition in the community for many years to raise funds for school books.

Principal Mary Jones says the night has always helped to raise money for the library which is one of the most expensive areas to resource.

This year she says they hope to raise $1000: $500 from ticket sales, and another $300-$500 from the raffle.

“It provides a really good boost for the library,” says Mrs Jones.

Mrs Jones has been principal for 13 years and says the event has been going on for longer than that.

She also sees it as an enjoyable night out for the community.

“It’s a historical event.”

“It’s a great mid-winter get together and it’s always lots of fun,” she says.

Jacqui McIntosh, a member of the fundraising trust, says that everyone who goes along has either been before or knows someone who’s been.

She says it’s an opportunity for locals to get together and have a drink and a good night.

“The organised teams bring a bottle of wine and some snacks and have a party at their table.”

The team that won last year’s quiz write the questions and run the following year’s event with help from their Fundraising Trust, says Mrs Jones.

There are 10 to 12 rounds, each with a different category, with 10 questions in each round.

“It all depends on what their [the wining team’s] interests are. There’s a big range of categories: math, geography, science. Music is usually a big feature,”  she says.

Although a light supper is provided, participants are encouraged to bring their own drinks and nibbles.

The event is held at Pukerua Bay School hall at 7 pm this Friday. Tickets are $5 each.
